In April 2022, I had the pleasure of DJing a private event for [Northwest University](https://www.northwestu.edu/) — a private university in Kirkland, WA just across the lake from Seattle — held inside the iconic [Seattle Art Museum](https://www.seattleartmuseum.org/). Setting up decks inside one of the Pacific Northwest's premier cultural institutions, surrounded by world-class art, is the kind of gig you don't forget.

The crowd was electric all night. [Pepas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepas) by Farruko — the guaracha-reggaeton anthem that hit No. 1 on the US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and racked up over a billion Spotify streams — was an early highlight, sending the room into full party mode. Pitbull kept the energy locked in from there. When a college crowd knows every word and won't leave the dance floor, you know it's a good night.

One of the shots from the event captured the phrase *"WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER"* displayed on the museum wall — a fitting backdrop for a night that felt exactly like that.

In April 2022, DJ Audeos played a live event for Northwest University inside the Seattle Art Museum — dancing, Pepas, Pitbull, and good vibes all night.

After the DJ they originally booked got COVID, I got a call early in the morning on the day of the wedding and asked to cover.

I was deeply honored to be invited to DJ the [OneAmerica Votes](https://www.oa-votes.com/) 2025 *Together We Rise* fundraiser at the Centilia Cultural Center in Seattle. [OneAmerica Votes](https://www.oa-votes.com/) is a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization focused on building political power for immigrant and refugee communities in Washington State — and their mission to elect progressive women and LGBTQIA+ candidates of color is one I fully support. Getting to contribute to that work through music felt meaningful in a way that goes beyond a typical gig.

The crowd made the night. Everyone in that room was warm, fired up, and genuinely inspired — the kind of energy that reminds you why this work matters. And the drag performance was absolutely incredible, bringing down the house and setting the tone for the whole evening. Nights like this are a reminder of how much art, music, and community belong together.

[Gan Bei](https://ganbeiseattle.square.site/) is one of the most beloved spots in Seattle's Chinatown-International District — a neighborhood karaoke bar and eatery owned by Yen Ma, who transformed the space from her mother's traditional Hong Kong bistro into the vibrant community hub it is today. Asian-owned, minority-owned, and woman-owned, Gan Bei has become what regulars call a true "living room" for the CID — known for its Chinese comfort food, nightly karaoke, and the kind of warm, welcoming energy that keeps people coming back. [The International Examiner](https://iexaminer.org/bottoms-up-why-gan-bei-is-a-cornerstone-of-community-in-the-cid-seven-years-after-opening/) called it a cornerstone of the community, and having spent many nights there myself, it's easy to see why.

Getting invited to DJ their 7th anniversary celebration on January 31st, 2026 was a real honor. Seven years is a milestone worth celebrating — especially for an independent, community-rooted spot like Gan Bei. The room was packed from the jump and the dance floor never cleared. Everyone was in it all night — great energy, great people, and the kind of crowd that makes DJing feel effortless.

Congrats to Yen Ma and the whole Gan Bei crew on seven incredible years. Here's to many more.

DJ Audeos at Gan Bei's 7th Anniversary Party — Seattle Chinatown

On July 4th, 2014, I had the pleasure of DJing Brian and Rachel's wedding reception at [Tacoma's Landmark Convention Center](https://tacomaslandmark.com/) — specifically the [Roof Garden Ballroom](https://tacomaslandmark.com/venues/roof-garden-ballroom/), a stunning rooftop venue with panoramic views of Commencement Bay and Mt. Rainier.

One of the highlights of the evening was getting introduced to the [Grand March](https://weddinghacked.com/what-is-a-grand-march-at-a-wedding/) — a traditional German wedding procession where the newlyweds lead their guests in a lively, choreographed march to open the reception. Rooted in 18th and 19th century European folk culture and brought to the US by German and Czech immigrants, it was a tradition I'd never been asked to coordinate music for before. Getting to be part of that moment — providing the music as the whole wedding party marched together — was genuinely special.

The reception also featured a performance by Japanese [Taiko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiko) drummers. Taiko is a centuries-old percussion tradition deeply embedded in Japanese ceremony and celebration — introduced to Japan as early as the 6th century and known for its powerful, thunderous rhythms. Hearing it performed live on a rooftop in Tacoma was something else entirely.

Playing a wedding reception is one of the most rewarding gigs a DJ can take on. You've got to read the room constantly — shifting between first-dance slow jams, dinner-hour background grooves, and floor-packing party sets as the night builds. Doing it outdoors on the Fourth of July, with all of those cultural moments woven into the evening, made it unforgettable. The night air, the skyline, and the fireworks over the sound were just the cherry on top.

The Landmark is a beautiful historic venue — added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993 — and the Roof Garden Ballroom's outdoor deck was the perfect stage for it all. Big thanks to Brian and Rachel for having me.

## The Strain

Pink Lemonade is an indica-dominant hybrid — a cross of [Lemon Skunk](https://www.leafly.com/strains/lemon-skunk) and [Purple Kush](https://www.leafly.com/strains/purple-kush) — that punches well above its weight in the flavor department. The aroma is bright and citrus-forward, with lemon and grapefruit on the nose and a fruity, mentholated finish. Terpene-wise you're looking at myrcene, limonene, and pinene — a classic combination that keeps things uplifting without getting too heavy.

Effects start creative and focused, then ease into a smooth body relaxation. THC typically runs 17-22%, so it's potent but manageable. A solid daytime strain if you know your limits.

## The Strain

Animals XJ-13 is a cross between [XJ-13](https://www.leafly.com/strains/xj-13) and Cement Shoes, bred by [Universally Seeded](https://seedfinder.eu/en/strain-info/animals-xj-13/universally-seeded). XJ-13 itself is a sativa-dominant hybrid of [Jack Herer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Herer) and [G-13](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G13) — two heavy hitters — while Cement Shoes brings the indica depth, coming from a lineage of Animal Cookies and OGKB. The result is a well-balanced hybrid that leans cerebral before settling into something more relaxed.

The flavor profile is distinctly citrus-forward — lemon upfront, with tangerine and pineapple underneath and a sour, earthy finish. Terpene-wise you're looking at myrcene, limonene, and pinene working together, which explains both the brightness on the nose and the clarity of the high. Effects run euphoric and focused early on, then ease into a calm, body-relaxing finish without putting you on the couch.

## The Show That Shook the Shack

Now lissen here — for over 30 good years, [Shake the Shack](https://www.kexp.org/shows/shake-shack/) had itself a home on [KEXP](https://www.kexp.org) right here in Seattle, and I'll tell you what, it was finer than a brand new pair of boots on a Saturday night. The whole shebang was cooked up by the one and only **Doctor Leon Berman**, a man who had the good sense and the gall to call himself "The Proctologist of Rock 'n' Roll." Now if that don't tell you somethin' about the kinda show this was, well pardner, I don't know what will. Later on, **Mike Fuller** picked up the reins and kept them horses runnin' straight and true, right up until April 2018 when Shake the Shack rode off into the sunset after three decades of pure, uncut, barnburning glory.

Every week since 2009, that blessed show'd send a playlist straight to my inbox like a postcard from a sweeter time. [Rockabilly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockabilly), boogie rhythm & blues, old style country, surf — the kinda music that gets into your boots before your brain even knows the record's spinnin'. I'd open that email like it was Christmas mornin' every single time.

## The Music, Lord Have Mercy

We ain't talkin' about no watered-down, radio-friendly, rhinestone cowboy nonsense here, no sir. This here playlist is the genuine article — straight from the source, dug up from the roots. [Bo Diddley](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Diddley) and that rectangular guitar of his. The incomparable **Queen of Rockabilly** herself, [Wanda Jackson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanda_Jackson), who could out-sing and out-wild just about anybody in the room. [Bill Haley & His Comets](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Haley_%26_His_Comets) knockin' the clock right off the wall. And of course [Elvis Presley](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley) shakin' them hips.

But here's what made Shake the Shack something real special — Doctor Berman and Fuller never just played the hits and called it a day. No no no. Right after a big name legend they'd throw on some forgotten honky-tonk hellraiser or a deep-cut [surf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surf_music) instrumental that'd make your jaw drop clean to the floor. You'd be tapping your boot to something you'd never heard before in your life, scrambling for a pen to write the name down before it slipped away. That was the magic of it, and ain't no algorithm in the world that can replicate it.

## Keepin' the Flame Burnin', Darlin'

When that show signed off for the last time, I wasn't about to let all that good music gather dust. So I went back through every last one of them weekly playlist emails — every single one going back to 2009 — and I've been stitchin' this thing together track by track, 195 songs deep and still going. It ain't the same as hearin' Doctor Berman's voice come crackling through the radio on a Sunday morning, but it's the closest thing I got.

So crank it up real loud, kick them boots off, and let's shake this shack one more time.

As I've been training for the [2023 NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon](https://www.nyrr.org/races/rbcbrooklynhalf) some of my favorite workout music while I'm running is straight classic 80s bass and electro.

## The Origins of Electro

Electro emerged in the early 1980s at the intersection of hip hop, funk, and the nascent world of electronic music. The genre's defining moment is widely considered to be [Afrika Bambaataa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrika_Bambaataa) & Soulsonic Force's **"Planet Rock"** (1982), which fused New York hip hop with the robotic synthesizer textures of [Kraftwerk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraftwerk)'s "Trans-Europe Express" and "Numbers". It was a collision of worlds — the Bronx block party and the German art-electronic underground — and it changed music permanently.

Central to the sound was the **[Roland TR-808](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TR-808) Rhythm Composer**, a drum machine that was discontinued by Roland in 1983 due to poor sales, yet went on to become one of the most influential instruments in popular music history. Its deep, booming kick drum, snappy snare, and long-decay cowbell were not realistic — they were something entirely new. Producers gravitated toward the 808 precisely because it was synthetic, creating rhythmic foundations that felt futuristic and almost alien.

## West Coast Bass and The Egyptian Lover

While Bambaataa defined the New York sound, Los Angeles developed its own electro lineage. **[The Egyptian Lover](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_Lover)** — Greg Broussard — became one of the most important figures in West Coast electro, releasing records on his own Egyptian Empire label starting in 1983. Tracks like "Egypt, Egypt" and "On the Nile" leaned heavily into the TR-808's capabilities, layering hypnotic basslines under his smooth, vocoder-treated vocals. His approach was more minimalist than his East Coast contemporaries, letting the drum machine breathe and the bass do the heavy lifting.

The Egyptian Lover's influence is immense — he's a direct ancestor of Miami bass, Los Angeles hip hop, and West Coast rap production throughout the 80s and 90s.

## The Playlist: 1983 to Now

This playlist spans over four decades of bass and electro, opening with the genre's earliest moments — **[Jonzun Crew](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonzun_Crew)**'s "Pack Jam" from 1983 is a perfect entry point, a bubbly, robotic funk record that sounds like it was beamed in from another planet — and running through to the present day.

From the classic era you'll find artists like **[Dynamix II](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamix_II)**, one of the defining acts of Miami bass, and **Maggotron**, who helped push electro into darker, more aggressive territory. **Tricky D** brings the West Coast bass tradition, while **Bass Junkie** represents the UK's deep obsession with the form — a scene that never stopped taking American electro seriously even when US audiences had moved on.

The playlist also reaches into more contemporary territory. **[Daft Punk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daft_Punk)**'s inclusion is no accident — the duo spent their entire career in open dialogue with electro and disco, and tracks like "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" are built on the same principles as the 808-driven records that preceded them by 20 years. **[Skrillex](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skrillex)** represents a more recent lineage, where bass music fractured into dubstep, trap, and beyond — but the DNA of the TR-808 and the electro kick drum is still audible underneath.

Bass music is a term used to describe several genres of electronic dance music & hip hop music arising from the 1980s on, focusing on a prominent bass drum and/or bassline sound. Typically, the bass sound is created using synthesizers & drum machines like, for example, the influential Roland TR-808.

## Free Cannabis Product Recall Plan Template (WAC 314-55 Compliance – Washington State)

If you operate a licensed cannabis producer or processor in Washington State, you are required to maintain a Cannabis Product Recall Plan as part of your regulatory compliance documentation.

Under WAC 314-55-225, Washington cannabis licensees must have procedures in place for identifying, managing, and reporting product recalls that may pose a risk to consumers.

When I was preparing compliance documentation for my own I-502 producer/processor license, I discovered that while this requirement is clearly outlined in the regulations, it’s surprisingly difficult to find a usable recall plan template online.

So I’m making one available here as a free Microsoft Word template for Washington cannabis license holders.

This template allows you to quickly fill in:

- Company name
- WSLCB license number
- Recall coordinator
- Contact information
- Internal recall procedures

## Why a Recall Plan Is Required in Washington

Washington cannabis regulations require licensees to have documented procedures for recalling products that may present a risk to consumers.

A recall may be necessary in situations such as:

- Detection of unapproved pesticides
- Pesticide levels above allowable limits
- Residual solvent levels exceeding regulatory thresholds
- Contamination or ingredients unfit for human consumption
- Other safety issues discovered after products have been distributed

Having a written recall plan ensures that licensees can respond quickly to protect consumers and coordinate with the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB).

## What This Recall Plan Template Includes

The template outlines a structured recall process including:

### Recall Coordinator

Designation of a responsible individual within your company who manages the recall process.

### Recall Investigation

Steps for investigating complaints or potential safety issues, including reviewing traceability data, lab results, and product distribution.

### Notification Procedures

Procedures for promptly notifying:

- WSLCB enforcement officers
- Retailers or other recipients of affected product
- Consumers (when necessary)

### Product Retrieval

Steps for identifying and retrieving affected products from the supply chain.

### Product Remediation or Destruction

Coordination with WSLCB to determine whether recalled product must be:

- Remediated
- Salvaged
- Destroyed

### Recall Tracking and Reporting

Maintaining records and providing progress updates to WSLCB until recall closure is approved.

## Why I’m Hosting This Template

This Cannabis Product Recall Plan Template was originally shared as a courtesy resource by the Cannabis Farmers Council to assist Washington cannabis farmers with compliance.

However, when I went looking for the file online, I discovered that it was very difficult to find freely available.

The only place I was able to locate it was on a document subscription website (pdffiller.com) that required a paid subscription to access it.

Since this document was originally meant to help Washington cannabis licensees with compliance, I believe it should remain freely accessible to the industry.

As a licensed Washington State I-502 producer/processor, I’m hosting this Word version so other operators can easily access and customize it.

- A new I-502 license applicant
- Preparing compliance documentation
